Lion Dance at Super Saturday

Day 6 June 14 Super Saturday: Experiencing Taiwan

Lion Dance at Super Saturday

In addition to the static exhibitions and camps, the Asia Society also organizes regular “Super Saturday,” most of which fall on the second Saturday of each month. On these days, the Asia Society arranges parent-child friendly activities so that children and adults can get hands-on and take home a finished product. Each Super Saturday has a different theme, and this year’s event featured themes related to space, Nowruz, and Islamic culture, while this year’s event featured Experiencing Taiwan.

The organizer’s dedication can be seen from the booth layout. In the center of the booth, there was a stage for performing the English version of the Poo Poo Show, surrounded by graffiti of paper umbrellas, patterns of flowers and fabrics, the making of scented buns, and an introduction of the characteristics of Taiwan’s counties and cities.

Drawing butterflies and dragon boats

The booths we helped with were paper butterflies and paper dragon boats. Butterflies are one of Taiwan’s representative insects, and the Purple Butterfly Valley in Kaohsiung’s Maolin is world-famous for its rare overwintering butterflies, while the dragon boat echoes the theme we shared the day before, which is one of the most important oriental festivals in recent memory. Some of the children were not very patient in the process of making the dragon boat and could not stick the lipstick glue on, so I could only encourage and persuade them to continue, or make an example for them. When we saw the dragon boat taking shape, every child was grinning from ear to ear.
